The president of Benin Republic Mr. Patrick Talon has visited his counterpart President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria to thank him for reopening Nigeria- Benin Borders.
On Tuesday, he met with Buhari behind close doors at the state house in Abuja, where Buhari assured him of the need to create a “good neighbourliness” among West Africa countries.
In a statement issue, It was stated that Mr. Talons visit was purposefully to show appreciation to President Buhari for his decision to re-opening the borders in December which had been creating economics hardship for the people in Benin and the neighbuoring countries across West Africa.
“Our relationship with neighbours must therefore remain cordial’’ Talon said. Noting that Year 2020 came with huge challenges which might remain in 2021.
You will recall that the President Talon was in Abuja on June 2019 on a courtesy visit to him counterpart then to discuss bilateral issues.
In August 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the closure of Nigeria’s land borders to curtail smuggling of rice and other essential foodstuff as well as small and light weapons which have been creating uneasiness within Nigeria’s northern part through which ammunitions got to the hands of insurgents like Boko haram.
Other issues discussed during the visit bordered on bilateral and security issues they concern the sub-region.
