A Senegalese entrepreneur is helping bring West African cuisine into Istanbul’s diverse culinary landscape, demonstrating how African-owned businesses can create opportunities for cultural exchange and economic cooperation in Türkiye.

Khodia M’Baye, who has lived in Türkiye for approximately 15 years, runs Kara Lounge Restaurant in Istanbul’s Tophane district, where traditional African dishes are attracting growing interest from Turkish customers.

According to a report published by Türkiye’s Anadolu Agency on Friday, M’Baye began developing the idea of introducing African cuisine to the Turkish market about a decade ago, eventually opening her restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What initially attracted mainly international visitors has gradually developed into a dining destination for Turkish customers interested in discovering African culinary traditions.

Connecting African Traditions with Turkish Business

The restaurant combines African culinary traditions with locally sourced products and Turkish expertise.

Basic ingredients, including rice, fish and other food products, are purchased from suppliers in Türkiye, while certain ingredients associated with African cooking are imported from the continent.

The business also employs Turkish personnel, illustrating how African entrepreneurship can contribute to local economic activity while maintaining connections with African food traditions.

Ceren Mansuroğlu, the restaurant’s Turkish manager, told Anadolu Agency that Turkish and African cuisines share several similarities, particularly in their use of meat, fish and traditional cooking methods.

She explained that customers who are initially unfamiliar with African food often discover flavours and preparation techniques that resemble elements of Turkish cuisine.

Senegalese Cuisine Finds New Audiences

Among the dishes featured at the restaurant are Senegalese specialities such as thiéboudienne, a traditional rice and fish dish, alongside mafe and yassa.

These dishes introduce customers to culinary traditions that form an important part of West African cultural identity.

The growing interest among Turkish diners reflects the ability of food to encourage interaction between communities and introduce consumers to cultures they may know relatively little about.

For M’Baye, the restaurant represents both a business venture and an opportunity to share African culture with the wider Turkish public.

Entrepreneurship Beyond Government Agreements

Economic relations between Türkiye and African countries are often discussed in terms of major investments, trade agreements and diplomatic initiatives.

Yet smaller businesses established by African entrepreneurs represent another dimension of these relationships.

By purchasing from Turkish suppliers, employing local workers and introducing African products to new customers, such enterprises can establish practical commercial and social connections between the two regions.

Kara Lounge offers an example of how these connections can develop through individual initiative rather than formal government programmes.

Although the Anadolu Agency report did not disclose the restaurant’s revenues, employment figures or import volumes, its experience illustrates the contribution that diaspora entrepreneurship can make to cultural understanding and everyday economic exchange.

For African entrepreneurs seeking opportunities abroad, M’Baye’s experience also highlights the potential of introducing distinctive cultural products to established consumer markets.
