Nearly 15,000 vulnerable people in Rwanda have gained access to essential healthcare services through a Qatar-funded initiative designed to ease the financial burden of medical treatment and strengthen social protection for low-income families.
The project, implemented by Qatar Charity with financial support from Qatar’s Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, has benefited 14,904 people over a one-year period, according to the Qatar News Agency (QNA).
Developed in coordination with Rwandan government institutions, the initiative covers contributions to the country’s community-based health insurance scheme, enabling eligible families to access essential and specialized medical services.
The programme focuses on households facing financial difficulties that could otherwise prevent them from obtaining necessary medical treatment.
Godfrey Kayigana, Director General of Social Affairs and Community Development at Rwanda’s Ministry of Local Government, welcomed the initiative and praised Qatar Charity’s commitment to transparency in selecting beneficiaries.
During follow-up visits, Kayigana highlighted the project’s contribution to expanding healthcare access among vulnerable communities and supporting sustainable development.
He also described Qatar Charity as a trusted partner in humanitarian and development cooperation.
Beneficiaries were identified in coordination with Rwanda’s Ministry of Local Government and the country’s Mufti, Sheikh Musa Sindayigana, using criteria designed to prioritize families facing the greatest financial hardship.
According to QNA, several beneficiaries told visiting project representatives that healthcare expenses had previously prevented them from obtaining the treatment they needed.
The insurance coverage has helped address those financial barriers while supporting household stability and improving access to medical services.
The initiative illustrates Qatar’s continuing humanitarian engagement in Africa, particularly through programmes that work alongside national institutions to expand essential services.
By supporting Rwanda’s existing health insurance system, the project also highlights an approach to international development assistance that seeks to strengthen established social protection mechanisms.
The programme forms part of Qatar Charity’s broader efforts to improve living conditions and promote sustainable development among vulnerable populations.
