Bank of Ghana Unveils Bold Reforms to Strengthen Financial Sector and Boost Innovation

The Bank of Ghana is set to implement a series of regulatory and policy reforms aimed at strengthening the financial sector, improving financial inclusion and fostering innovation in Ghana’s banking industry.

Dr. Johnson Asiamah, Governor, Bank of Ghana speaking at the presidency recently outlined key measures to address challenges such as high non-performing loans, weak risk management practices and cybersecurity threats in the banking sector. He emphasized the need for a more transparent and resilient financial system that supports economic growth.

Among the proposed reforms is the enforcement of strict prudential regulations, updates to the Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions Act 930 and the introduction of a new digital financial strategy. The governor also highlighted plans to improve financial technology and digital asset adoption, positioning Ghana as a regional hub for fintech innovation.

To enhance financial inclusion, the Bank of Ghana will also expand access to financial services, ensuring that businesses and individuals benefit from a modern, fair and stable financial system. These reforms, he noted will help create a more competitive and sustainable banking environment that drives economic transformation.
