President Ruto’s Statement
Kenyan President William Ruto, in his capacity as the Chair of the East African Community (EAC), has issued a strong appeal for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities in the DRC. Expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis, he emphasized the obligation of all parties to facilitate humanitarian access and to seek peaceful resolutions to the conflict.
In his statement, President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to regional peace and security, stressing the need for diplomacy over military escalation:
“I call for the immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities, emphasise the obligation of all parties to facilitate humanitarian access to affected populations, and urge both sides to pursue peaceful means to resolve this tragic conflict.”
He further highlighted his direct engagement with DRC President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame, urging them to heed the calls for peace from the people of the region and the international community.
“As chair of the EAC, I call on the parties to the Luanda process and my brothers, President Félix Tshisekedi and President Paul Kagame, both of whom I have spoken to this evening, to heed the call for peace.”
Urgent Diplomatic Action
To address the crisis, President Ruto announced that he has consulted with the Heads of State of EAC Member States and will convene an Extraordinary Summit within 48 hours to determine the way forward. This summit is expected to bring together regional leaders to discuss measures to de-escalate tensions and reinforce diplomatic solutions.
In a broader call for regional and international collaboration, President Ruto emphasized the need for coordinated efforts with the African Union (AU), Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the international community. He urged all stakeholders to encourage dialogue over continued violence:
“The EAC stands ready to forge stronger collaboration with the African Union, Southern African Development Community, and the international community in encouraging the warring parties to give priority to dialogue.”
