Barrister, as he was fondly called, was a pioneer of Fuji music, a genre that has grown into a global phenomenon and is recognized as a vital part of African musical heritage. Born into the Yoruba ethnic group in Nigeria, he discovered his musical talent at a young age and turned it into a lifelong career that left an indelible mark on the world.
The Rise of Fuji Music
Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister is credited with creating and popularizing Fuji music, transforming it from local Islamic “were” songs into a genre with global appeal. His innovative fusion of traditional African rhythms with contemporary beats elevated Fuji to a new level, captivating audiences far beyond Nigeria’s borders. During his life time, he recorded more than 100 albums that received great applauds from bookmakers and fans globally. He was decorated with more than 50 chieftancy titles from different parts of Nigeria and beyond and also a devoted Muslim with a large family to his credit.

Notably, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music by City University Los Angeles, United States of America, and was named Africa International Music Ambassador where he was honored alongside prominent figures like Robert Young, a former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria. In recognition of his contributions to Nigerian music and culture, he was also conferred the Member of the Federal Republic (MFR) by the Nigerian government. These honors reflected his impact both as a cultural ambassador and a musical icon.

Though he passed on in 2010, Barrister’s influence lives on. His music continues to inspire new generations of Fuji artists and music lovers around the world. His legacy is further strengthened by his discovery and mentorship of another Fuji legend, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate). Under Barrister’s guidance, K1 rose to prominence, becoming the face of the modern Fuji movement and carrying the genre to global stages.
