A Tribute to a Revolutionary Icon and Champion of African Liberation
The African continent is in mourning following the passing of Namibia’s Founding Father and African liberation hero, H.E. Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, at the age of 95. As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from across Africa and beyond, celebrating the life and legacy of a man who epitomized courage and unwavering dedication to the struggle for Namibia’s independence and the broader vision of African unity.
African Union (AU) Chairperson, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, expressed his deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to Dr. Nujoma’s family, particularly to the Founding First Lady, H.E. Kovambo Nujoma, as well as to the government and people of the Republic of Namibia.
“The continent and indeed the world mourn the passing of one of its most illustrious revolutionary leaders,” said Faki. “He was the epitome of courage, never wavering from his vision for a free Namibia and a unified Africa.”
Dr. Nujoma, widely regarded as the father of Namibian independence, led the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) through decades of resistance against colonial rule. His leadership and steadfast resolve ultimately brought freedom to Namibia in 1990, where he served as the country’s first president until 2005. Beyond his national contributions, Dr. Nujoma was a powerful voice for African unity and liberation, inspiring generations of leaders and activists across the continent.
His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will endure as a beacon of hope and determination for future generations. The African Union and leaders from across the globe have recognized his contributions not just to Namibia but to the broader cause of African liberation and development.
