In a bold and clarion statement, the Sikiru Ayinde Barrister Musical Forum (SABMF), the globally recognized and lawfully registered body representing all fans and admirers of the late Fuji music legend, Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (MFR), has reiterated its unwavering commitment to preserving his towering legacy—one they insist belongs not to any single family, but to the entire world.
In a press release titled “Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister’s Legacy is Public, Not Personal”, the group expressed deep concern over recent troubling attempts by some of Barrister’s children to suppress fan-led tributes and scholarly projects aimed at honoring the icon’s cultural contributions. These actions, the forum stated, amount to legacy censorship and are an affront to the collective memory of a man revered as the Father of Fuji Music and a beacon of Yoruba culture.
A Legacy for the People
From Lagos to London, and from Ibadan to Indiana, the influence of Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister radiates far beyond his immediate family. His music shaped generations, elevated Yoruba philosophical thought, and inspired movements. In the words of the SABMF, “His contributions to African music, Yoruba identity, and social consciousness make him a national and global treasure—not the property of any individual or private group.”
Drawing parallels with figures like Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and Michael Jackson, the forum emphasized that legacies of global icons are typically nurtured and sustained by the public—fans, researchers, performers, and cultural institutions—not limited to family estates.
BarryFest: A Celebration of Truth and Unity
SABMF is the official organizer of BarryFest, a biennial festival that unites Barrister fans from across the globe to celebrate his musical and cultural contributions. The event is non-commercial, self-funded, and legally recognized under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“These are acts of love, not commerce,” said Hajji Laide Olawumi, Chairman of the BarryFest Event Forum. “No one makes profit from BarryFest. We do it out of reverence and deep emotional connection to his music, his wisdom, and his message.”
Censorship of Legacy Projects: A Worrying Trend
The Forum highlighted a recent disturbing incident involving the removal of an academic documentary by Professor Saheed Aderinto, an internationally acclaimed historian and Dan David Prize laureate. His work, which honored Barrister’s cultural significance, was reportedly taken down from platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok due to actions taken by some of Barrister’s children.
“This type of interference does not honor their father—it diminishes him,” stated Agbaakin Ademola Adesigbin, Secretary of the BarryFest Forum. “We call on them to embrace the global love for Barrister, not fight it.”
A Call for Unity and Respect
The SABMF has made a passionate appeal to concerned individuals to cease all forms of harassment, threats, and suppression directed at fans, scholars, and cultural promoters. Instead, they encourage Barrister’s family to join hands with the broader community in nurturing and safeguarding the musical icon’s enduring legacy.
“Legacy is not a birthright—it is a responsibility,” the statement read. “We, the fans, admirers, and cultural promoters of Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, have accepted this responsibility with reverence and dedication. We will not be discouraged. We will not be silenced. And we will not allow history to be hijacked.”

The BarryFest movement and all affiliated fan clubs have vowed to continue their mission undeterred—to celebrate the Oludasile Fuji in truth, dignity, and unity.
