In a bold move to reposition Ogun State as a premier tourism and cultural destination, Governor Dapo Abiodun has unveiled the newly renovated Olumo Rock Tourism Complex in Abeokuta—now open to the public free of charge until the end of September 2025.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Abiodun described the initiative as a strategic step to encourage tourism, promote cultural heritage, and stimulate the local economy. He emphasized that Olumo Rock is not merely a natural formation but a powerful cultural symbol for the Egba people—representing strength, refuge, and identity.
“This renovation is a journey into our past, a celebration of who we are, and a gateway to a prosperous future. It is not just about bricks and mortar—it’s about heritage, pride, and economic empowerment,” he said.
The revamped complex now features a contemporary art gallery showcasing portraits of notable Nigerians, a scenic gazebo, restaurants offering both indigenous and international cuisine, adire fabric stalls, and modern amenities including a backup power system and state-of-the-art elevators.
Governor Abiodun explained that the transformation of Olumo Rock is aligned with his administration’s ISEYA agenda, which positions tourism as a vital pillar for economic development. He underscored that tourism, when fully harnessed, can generate employment, foster investments, and promote intercultural dialogue.
“This site has moved from being a mere historical monument to a modern cultural and creative hub. It is a tourism magnet that will attract visitors from across the world, empower artisans and creatives, and strengthen our economy,” he stated.

He also disclosed plans to concession the newly upgraded complex to a reputable management organization, ensuring its sustainability and long-term relevance.
Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, lauded the governor’s commitment to cultural development, noting that the facelift will reposition the tourist site and boost visitor turnout.
In his address, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, highlighted the rock’s historic and spiritual significance. He recalled how Olumo Rock once served as a safe haven and observation point for the Egba people during times of war, while also remaining a site where prayers are answered.
Adding her voice, renowned cultural ambassador and CEO of Nike Art Gallery, Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, expressed enthusiasm for the potential of the revamped complex. She affirmed that it would soon become a top-tier tourism destination, attracting international art lovers and museum curators.
“We are set to turn this site into the number one cultural hub in Nigeria. We’ll bring global art enthusiasts, share knowledge, and create new economic opportunities for our youth through arts and culture,” she said.
With this launch, Ogun State has not only preserved a significant heritage site but has also taken a major leap toward building a sustainable cultural and tourism economy that connects tradition with modernity.
