DOHA, October 28, 2026 – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has praised Qatar’s efforts to help resolve the regional crisis affecting navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and global supply chains, during a telephone conversation with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The call, announced by Qatar’s Amiri Diwan on Wednesday, also addressed bilateral relations and opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
According to the official statement, the leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments and discussed issues of mutual concern.
South Africa Recognises Qatar’s Diplomatic Role
During the conversation, President Ramaphosa commended Qatar’s diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the regional crisis, particularly those aimed at safeguarding maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of global supply chains.
The remarks reflect South Africa’s interest in international efforts to address disruptions affecting a strategic maritime passage central to global energy transportation and commercial shipping.
The Strait of Hormuz remains an important concern for countries beyond the Gulf region, including African economies exposed to international energy prices and shipping costs.
Strengthening Qatar-South Africa Relations
Beyond the regional crisis, Sheikh Tamim and Ramaphosa reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across various fields.
The conversation highlighted continued high-level diplomatic engagement between Doha and Pretoria amid international concerns over regional security and the stability of global trade routes.
