Qatar and Senegal have held ministerial discussions on bilateral energy cooperation in Moscow, bringing together senior officials from the two countries during an international gathering of natural gas producers.
Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, met Senegal’s Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines, Dr. El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf, on Monday, October 26.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 28th Ministerial Meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
According to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the discussions explored energy cooperation between the two countries and addressed issues on the forum’s agenda, including developments in global gas markets.
Senegal’s Growing Role in Natural Gas
The meeting comes as Senegal seeks to strengthen its position in the international natural gas industry.
The West African country has been developing its gas sector, including production associated with the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim project, and has maintained dialogue with the GECF on energy development and security.
Earlier this month, GECF Secretary-General Philip Mshelbila met Diouf during African Energy Week in Cape Town, where discussions covered shared energy priorities and opportunities for further cooperation between Senegal and the organisation.
Bilateral Dialogue Without Announced Agreements
Al-Kaabi’s meeting with the Senegalese minister formed part of a series of separate bilateral discussions with energy officials attending the Moscow gathering.
QNA reported that the Qatari minister also met counterparts from Algeria, Libya and Venezuela.
The official announcement did not identify any newly signed agreements, investment commitments or specific energy projects resulting from the Qatar-Senegal discussions.
Nevertheless, the meeting provided a diplomatic channel for both countries to examine potential cooperation in a sector of growing importance to Senegal’s economy.
Further official announcements would be required to determine whether the discussions lead to concrete bilateral initiatives.
