Afreximbank Report 2026: Charts Path to lndustrial Growth Amid Gobal Shifts

Date:

CAIRO-
The African continent is increasingly positioning itself as a major force in the evolving global economy, according to the newly launched African Trade Report 2026 by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). The report, themed “Leveraging Geopolitics for Trade and Industrialisation in Global Africa,” presents a compelling vision of how Africa can transform current geopolitical disruptions into unprecedented opportunities for industrial development, trade expansion, and economic prosperity.

Released at a critical juncture in global economic history, the report highlights how shifting geopolitical alliances, supply chain realignments, technological innovations, and changing investment patterns are reshaping international commerce. While many regions grapple with uncertainty and economic fragmentation, Africa is emerging as a continent with significant potential to capitalize on these transformations.

Africa Outpaces Global Growth
One of the report’s most encouraging findings is the strong performance of African economies despite persistent global challenges. Africa’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth accelerated from 3.4 percent in 2024 to 4.5 percent in 2025, surpassing the pace of global economic growth and demonstrating the continent’s increasing resilience.

The report also notes remarkable progress in controlling inflation. Aggregate inflation across Africa declined substantially from 21.6 percent to 13.1 percent, with some countries achieving inflation rates as low as 3 percent. This improvement reflects better macroeconomic management, stronger fiscal discipline, and enhanced monetary policy frameworks across several African nations.

Trade performance equally showed positive momentum. Merchandise trade expanded by 6.1 percent, reaching approximately US$1.5 trillion, while intra-African trade increased by 5.5 percent to about US$213.8 billion. These figures underscore growing regional integration, increased cross-border investments, and the strengthening role of African markets in driving economic growth.

Geopolitics Reshaping Global Commerce
According to the report, global trade is undergoing profound transformation due to geopolitical tensions, geoeconomic fragmentation, and structural shifts in production and consumption patterns. These developments have disrupted traditional supply chains, increased trade costs, and introduced new risks into global markets.

However, Africa’s position within this evolving landscape offers unique opportunities. As multinational corporations seek to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on traditional manufacturing hubs, African countries have an opportunity to attract investment, expand manufacturing capabilities, and integrate more deeply into global value chains.

The report emphasizes that technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), digital commerce, and automation, are reshaping logistics systems, customs administration, and production networks worldwide. For Africa, embracing these technologies could significantly improve competitiveness and efficiency across various sectors.

Challenges Remain, But Opportunities Are Greater
Despite the positive outlook, Afreximbank acknowledges that several structural barriers continue to limit Africa’s full trade potential. Among the most pressing challenges are:
-Persistent trade finance gaps.
-lnadequate transport and logistics infrastructure.
-Limited industrial capacity and value addition.
-High transaction costs for cross-border trade.
-Currency and payment system inefficiencies.

Yet, the report argues that these challenges should not be viewed solely as obstacles. Rather, they highlight areas where strategic investment and policy reforms can unlock enormous economic opportunities.
With global companies actively searching for resilient and diversified production locations, Africa possesses significant advantages, including a youthful population, abundant natural resources, expanding consumer markets, and growing digital connectivity.

AfCFTA as the Cornerstone of Africa’s Economic Future
At the heart of the report’s recommendations is the urgent need to accelerate implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), widely regarded as the world’s largest free trade area by number of participating countries.
The report stresses that effective implementation of AfCFTA will require:
-Finalizing tariff schedules.
-Harmonizing rules of origin.
-Strengthening national coordination mechanisms.
-Eliminating non-tariff barriers.
-Enhancing trade facilitation measures.

By creating a truly integrated continental market, AfCFTA has the potential to significantly boost intra-African trade, stimulate industrial production, and reduce dependence on external markets.
Strengthening Africa’s Financial Architecture
Afreximbank also calls for stronger support for African development finance institutions. Increased capitalization, fairer international regulatory frameworks, and improved access to long-term financing are identified as essential components of Africa’s industrial transformation agenda.

The report advocates for reforms to the global financial system, including more equitable international rule-making processes and improved debt restructuring mechanisms that better reflect the realities and development aspirations of African economies.

Digital Payments and Infrastructure Key to Success
Another major recommendation is the expansion of digital payment infrastructure across the continent. The report highlights the strategic importance of the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) in reducing dependence on foreign currencies for intra-African trade.
A fully operational PAPSS platform could significantly lower transaction costs, improve liquidity, accelerate cross-border payments, and facilitate greater trade among African nations.
Similarly, investments in transportation corridors, ports, railways, aviation networks, and logistics systems are identified as critical enablers of industrialization and trade competitiveness.

Building a Resilient Industrial Future for Global Africa
The overarching message of the African Trade Report 2026 is that Africa must move swiftly and strategically to convert global uncertainty into long-term economic opportunity.

As geopolitical tensions continue to redefine global supply chains and investment flows, Africa’s future competitiveness will depend on its ability to strengthen industrial ecosystems, expand regional trade, attract productive investment, and deepen financial integration.

The report concludes that a combination of adaptive policies, strategic trade positioning, industrial investment, and regional cooperation can place Africa at the centre of a new era of global economic growth.
For policymakers, investors, businesses, and development partners, the call to action is unmistakable: the time has come to accelerate the implementation of AfCFTA, expand trade finance, modernize infrastructure, strengthen digital payment systems, and build the foundations for a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable industrial future.
With the right choices and collective commitment, Africa is no longer merely participating in global trade—it is increasingly shaping its future and claiming its place as a major engine of growth in the global economy.
