Steadfast FC’s historic pre-season camp in Monteleone di Spoleto demonstrates how football can become a powerful bridge for tourism, culture, youth development and international cooperation

The arrival of Ghanaian football club Steadfast FC in the picturesque Italian municipality of Monteleone di Spoleto, in the Province of Perugia, is much more than a sporting event. It is a practical demonstration of how tourism, arts, culture, sports and creativity can help bridge the gap between Africa and Europe and create meaningful relationships between communities thousands of kilometres apart.

For the first time in Italy, Steadfast FC has chosen Monteleone di Spoleto as the venue for its pre-season training camp, scheduled for 14–27 August 2026. The Ghanaian club, which competes in the Division One League, will use the town’s sporting facilities while staying locally and preparing its players for the new season.

The initiative, supported by the Municipality of Monteleone di Spoleto, places a Ghanaian sporting institution at the centre of an European community and creates an opportunity for direct interaction between people, cultures and institutions.

Football as a Bridge Between Continents

Sport has always possessed a unique ability to bring people together. Unlike many traditional diplomatic channels, sport speaks a universal language understood by young people, communities and nations.

In this case, a football team from Ghana has travelled to a small Italian community in Umbria, transforming a training camp into an opportunity for cultural exchange, tourism promotion, youth development and international friendship.

Mayor Marisa Angelini expressed the significance of welcoming an international team to the municipality, describing it as an important opportunity for a small community and emphasising the desire to make the experience one of sport, mutual understanding and promotion of the territory.

The Mayor’s position reflects a broader reality: international tourism does not have to be built only around major cities, famous monuments or large events. Small communities can also become international destinations when they create meaningful experiences around sport, culture, hospitality and human connection.

Ghana Meets Umbria

The partnership between Steadfast FC and Monteleone di Spoleto establishes a direct connection between Ghana and Umbria.

It brings together two places with different geographical, historical and cultural backgrounds, yet with shared interests in community, youth, sport and human development.

For the Italian municipality, the presence of the Ghanaian team provides an opportunity to introduce Monteleone di Spoleto and the wider Valnerina region to an international audience.

For Steadfast FC, the training camp provides its young footballers with access to a different sporting and cultural environment while preparing for the new season.

The result is a two-way exchange.

Africa comes to Europe, while Europe opens its communities to Africa.

That is the essence of people-to-people diplomacy.

Beyond Football

The importance of the initiative goes beyond the football pitch.

According to the municipality, the Ghanaian club is particularly focused on the growth and development of its young players. Their time in Italy therefore represents not only sporting preparation but also an educational and cultural experience.

The players have the opportunity to experience Italian society, interact with local residents, discover a different environment and understand another culture.

At the same time, the local community gets an opportunity to learn about Ghana, its people, its football culture and its contemporary identity.

This is precisely where tourism, sport and culture intersect.

A football camp can become a cultural exchange.
A cultural exchange can become tourism.
Tourism can create business opportunities.
Business relationships can create investment.
And relationships between young people can create friendships that last for generations.

The Creative Power of Tourism

Africa-Europe relations should not be defined solely by government-to-government engagements.

There is enormous potential in building connections through creative industries, music, film, fashion, gastronomy, festivals, heritage, sport, tourism and the arts.

Africa possesses one of the world’s youngest populations and an extraordinarily rich cultural heritage. Europe, meanwhile, has extensive infrastructure, tourism markets, sporting institutions and cultural networks.

Connecting these strengths can create a new form of international partnership—one based not simply on aid or traditional diplomacy, but on mutual opportunity and shared value creation.

The Steadfast FC experience demonstrates this principle at community level.

A small town in Umbria is hosting young Africans.
A Ghanaian club is training in Italy.
Local businesses benefit from international visitors.
Young people experience another culture.
And both communities have an opportunity to tell their stories to a wider world.

This is tourism diplomacy in action.

Small Destinations, Global Connections

One of the most compelling aspects of the initiative is the role of Monteleone di Spoleto itself.

The municipality is a relatively small community, but its location, natural environment, sporting facilities, hospitality and high-altitude climate provide the conditions for international sporting activities.

The initiative shows that smaller destinations can compete for international attention by developing specialised experiences.

Rather than waiting for tourists to discover them, destinations can create reasons for people to come.

Sports tourism is one such reason.

Training camps, tournaments, sporting conferences, youth competitions and international sporting exchanges can generate visitor arrivals outside traditional tourism seasons while creating opportunities for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, cultural attractions and local businesses.

The Haruna Iddrisu Vision

The involvement of Haruna Iddrisu, President of Steadfast FC, Ghanaian Minister of Education and owner of the club, further underlines the potential of the initiative.

The decision to take the team outside Ghana for its preparation reflects an ambition that extends beyond football.

It creates an avenue for building relationships and collaborations capable of moving beyond the traditional boundaries of sport.

That is particularly important for Africa-Europe relations.

The future of international cooperation will increasingly depend on creating multiple points of connection—government, business, education, tourism, sport, culture, media and the creative industries.

A Model for Africa-Europe Tourism Cooperation

The Steadfast FC experience could become a model that other African and European destinations can replicate.

Imagine African football clubs conducting training camps in Europe while European clubs visit Africa.

Imagine African artists participating in European festivals while European artists tour African cultural destinations.

Imagine universities establishing youth exchange programmes alongside tourism initiatives.

Imagine African filmmakers, fashion designers, musicians and creative entrepreneurs partnering with European counterparts.

Imagine tourism boards promoting sporting, cultural and creative exchanges as part of destination marketing.

These initiatives can create a continuous flow of people, ideas, talent, investment and culture between the two continents.

That is how bridges are built.

From Tourism to Investment

Tourism should no longer be viewed simply as people travelling from one destination to another.

Modern tourism is increasingly about experiences, relationships, knowledge, creativity and economic opportunities.

When international visitors arrive, they spend money on accommodation, food, transportation, entertainment and services. But the deeper value comes when those visits create lasting relationships.

A Ghanaian player who trains in Italy may return as a tourist.

A Ghanaian club official may establish an Italian business relationship.

An Italian visitor may decide to travel to Ghana.

A young footballer may pursue an educational opportunity in Europe.

A cultural exchange may lead to a tourism partnership.

A sporting relationship may eventually produce investment.

The possibilities are enormous.

Africa-Europe Exchange Forum

Just like the way Steadfast FC training camp represents something larger than a pre-season football programme. It was the same initiative that Michelina Sanquest and myself, Kazeem Balogun thought of when we started Africa-Europe Tourism Exchange Forum last year which had policymakers, tourism experts, media and other investment and development partners joined the forum in Rome. One significant aspect of the forum was that, all participants from Africa stayed in the outskirt of Rome, at La Cerquetta Agriturismo Centro Benessere, Fonto Nove, just to have a feel of the rural area which really exposed us to a different beautiful realities about Italy.

It is a reminder that Africa and Europe are not distant worlds; they are neighbouring regions with enormous potential for collaboration.

The challenge is to move beyond occasional conferences and formal declarations and create more practical programmes that bring people together.

Tourism can provide the platform.

Sport can provide the connection.

Arts and culture can provide the identity.

Creativity can provide the innovation.

Youth can provide the future.

And business can provide the sustainability.

The experience unfolding between Ghana and Monteleone di Spoleto demonstrates what can happen when these elements come together.

A New Generation of Africa-Europe Relations

As Steadfast FC trains in the hills of Umbria, its players are doing more than preparing for a football season. They are participating in a small but significant experiment in international engagement.

Their presence creates a human connection between Ghana and Italy.

It gives Monteleone di Spoleto an opportunity to welcome Africa.

It gives Ghanaian young people an opportunity to experience Europe.

And it demonstrates how a football pitch can become a meeting point for tourism, culture, education, friendship and economic cooperation.

This is the kind of Africa-Europe relationship that should be encouraged and expanded.

Because the future of the two continents should not only be about governments meeting across conference tables.

It should also be about young people meeting on football fields, artists meeting on stages, entrepreneurs meeting in business forums, tourists discovering new destinations, filmmakers telling each other’s stories, and communities opening their doors to one another.

From Ghana to Umbria, Steadfast FC is showing that sport can build bridges—and that those bridges can lead to tourism, culture, creativity, investment and lasting friendship between Africa and Europe.
