Uyo Takes Centre Stage as League of African Ambassadors Golf Tournament Positions Akwa Ibom as a Rising Tourism and Investment Destination

Date:

UYO, AKWA IBOM — The League of African Ambassadors Fundraising Golf Tournament is set to bring together diplomats, government leaders, corporate executives, business leaders and golf enthusiasts in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in an event expected to showcase the state’s growing potential as a destination for sports tourism, business networking, culture and investment.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, is among the high-profile dignitaries confirmed for the tournament, alongside members of the diplomatic community, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.

Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Ambassador Ben Okoyen, said more than 150 golfers are expected to participate, while total attendance is projected at approximately 350 people, comprising African diplomats, corporate executives, government officials, business leaders and representatives of public and private-sector organisations.

Beyond the competition itself, Okoyen said the tournament is designed to create an informal but strategic platform for networking, diplomacy, business development and conversations on Africa’s socioeconomic advancement.

“The aspect of interaction is more than the game. We expect far more than 150 persons. We are expecting in the neighbourhood of 350 or thereabouts,” Okoyen said.

The programme will feature an opening ceremony, golf tournament, closing ceremony, fundraising and award dinners, alongside cultural presentations designed to give visitors an opportunity to experience the rich heritage, hospitality and creative traditions of Akwa Ibom.

Participants are expected to arrive on August 28, with the opening game scheduled for August 29 and the finals taking place on August 30.

Akwa Ibom’s Tourism Moment

For Akwa Ibom, the tournament represents more than another sporting event. It provides a valuable opportunity to position the state before an influential international audience comprising ambassadors, diplomats, investors, corporate executives and decision-makers.

Hosting a gathering of this calibre can strengthen Akwa Ibom’s profile in the emerging global market for sports tourism, diplomatic tourism, business events and investment tourism.

The presence of African ambassadors and senior government officials also creates opportunities for the state to promote its tourism assets, hospitality industry, cultural heritage, cuisine, creative economy and investment opportunities.

Such events can generate direct economic benefits through hotel accommodation, restaurants, transportation, entertainment, shopping and local services, while also creating longer-term value by encouraging visitors and investors to return to the state.

The tournament therefore offers Akwa Ibom an opportunity to demonstrate that tourism can serve not only as a leisure activity but also as a platform for economic diplomacy, business connectivity, cultural exchange and destination branding.

Why Uyo?

The choice of Uyo as the host city has attracted commendation from stakeholders in the golfing community, particularly because of the quality and ambience of the Ibom Golf Course.

Chairman of the FCT Golf Association, Akabom Enobong, recently described the facility as one of the finest golf resorts in West Africa, highlighting its serene environment and suitability for high-level engagements.

According to him, the resort provides an atmosphere conducive to relaxation, strategic thinking and meaningful conversations—qualities that make golf particularly attractive for diplomatic and corporate networking.

The setting also gives Uyo an advantage in promoting itself as a destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE), as well as premium leisure and sports tourism.

Golf as a Platform for African Diplomacy

Okoyen explained that the tournament is not simply a fundraising initiative but part of a broader League of African Ambassadors effort to promote solidarity, dialogue and the advancement of the African cause.

“Business leaders, corporate bodies and government officials will take advantage of the platform golf is providing to interact with the diplomatic community,” he said.

This interaction could have significance beyond the golf course. Informal engagements among diplomats, policymakers and business leaders can open doors for partnerships in tourism, trade, investment, culture, aviation, infrastructure and other sectors critical to Africa’s development.

For Akwa Ibom, this creates an opportunity to place its tourism and investment proposition directly before influential African and international stakeholders.

Culture Meets Sports and Diplomacy

A major attraction of the tournament will be the planned showcase of Akwa Ibom’s cultural heritage.

The integration of culture into an international sporting event gives the state an opportunity to turn visitors into tourism ambassadors by allowing them to experience its traditions, food, music, fashion, hospitality and creative expressions.

This combination of golf, diplomacy, business and culture reflects the growing global recognition of sports tourism as a powerful driver of destination development.

The event can also help strengthen the connection between tourism and other sectors of the local economy, particularly hospitality, transportation, entertainment, fashion, crafts and the creative industries.

Gateway to Greater Tourism Opportunities

The tournament comes at a time when destinations across Africa are increasingly using international sporting and business events to attract visitors, stimulate investment and strengthen their global image.

Akwa Ibom has significant potential to benefit from this trend. Its relatively peaceful environment, hospitality infrastructure, cultural attractions, coastline and growing reputation for hosting major events provide a foundation for a broader tourism strategy.

The League of African Ambassadors Golf Tournament can therefore serve as a showcase for what Akwa Ibom can offer beyond the golf course—an invitation to diplomats, investors, tourists and event organisers to discover the state more fully.

Prizes, Partnerships and Global Connections

The tournament remains open to registration and corporate partnerships, with trophies to be presented to outstanding performers across various categories.

Additional attractions include return flight tickets to destinations such as London, Barbados and Ghana, provided through participating airlines including Ibom Air, Air Peace and Arik Air.

With hundreds of influential participants expected in Uyo, the tournament has the potential to leave a legacy that extends beyond the final round of golf.

For Akwa Ibom, the bigger prize may be the opportunity to convert an international sporting gathering into a tourism, investment and diplomatic showcase, reinforcing Uyo’s emerging reputation as a city capable of hosting high-level African and international events.

In this regard, the League of African Ambassadors Golf Tournament is not merely about who wins on the course. It is also about how Akwa Ibom can win the attention of the continent—and transform that attention into lasting tourism, business and investment opportunities.
