Durban Shines as 80 Local Films Premiere at Suncoast Cinema — Minnie Dlamini, Young Creators, and Pros Lead a New Wave of Storytelling

Date:

DURBAN-

Durban’s creative energy is set to ignite this Friday, November 28, as more than 80 locally produced short films premiere at the Suncoast CineCentre, marking one of the city’s biggest celebrations of homegrown talent. This special showcase—open to the public—features an impressive mix of emerging filmmakers, seasoned professionals, and even South Africa’s beloved media star Minnie Dlamini.

These films were created during the thrilling 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP), an international, Cannes-qualifying festival that challenges teams to write, shoot, and edit a complete short film in just 48 hours. More than 1,000 participants took part in Durban’s edition this year, from high school students and content creators to professional production houses.

In a powerful display of inclusivity, the lineup also features films by hearing-impaired and blind filmmakers, proving that creativity is limitless when a community rallies together.

A Platform for New Voices and Bold Ideas

Now in its 25th year globally, the 48HFP empowers aspiring storytellers across more than 140 cities worldwide. Its Durban chapter continues to grow, offering a dynamic space for people of all ages and backgrounds to experiment, collaborate, and find their voice in the world of film.

“We are excited about the growing school participation, as everyone deserves a way to express their creativity and explore career paths in storytelling, content creation, lights, camera, and action,” says Nerusha Maharaj Sadapal, Durban’s City Producer.

Schools are encouraged to share this opportunity with parents, teachers, and students as a gateway to creative careers. The upcoming screenings will highlight what is possible when passion and community spirit collide.
