ABUJA-
Nigeria has taken a bold step toward repositioning itself on the global tourism map as stakeholders across the nation’s tourism and hospitality industry unite behind sweeping reforms—signaling that the country is ready to welcome the world, spearheaded by the current Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA).
This renewed momentum formed the core outcome of the National Hospitality and Tourism Stakeholders Meeting held in Abuja, recently, themed “Shaping the Future of Nigerian Tourism Together.” The high-level gathering convened key players from government, private sector, investment circles, development agencies, and industry professionals, all aligned toward unlocking the immense potential of Nigeria’s tourism economy.

In his keynote remarks, the Director General of NTDA, Dr. Olayiwola Awakan, reaffirmed the foundational pillars of tourism—attractions, hospitality, and transportation—emphasizing that Nigeria’s success will depend on how effectively these elements are developed, integrated, and promoted.
At the heart of discussions was a strong call for the urgent re-enactment of the NTDA Act 2022, viewed as a critical step toward strengthening regulatory clarity, boosting investor confidence, and accelerating sector-wide growth. Stakeholders emphasized that modernizing the legal framework would create a more enabling environment for both local and international investments.
Another major highlight was the push to move tourism to the Concurrent Legislative List, a strategic shift aimed at fostering deeper collaboration between federal and state governments. This, participants noted, would unlock regional tourism assets and ensure more coordinated development across the country.
Industry leaders further stressed the need for:
A unified standard and quality assurance framework across the hospitality sector
Stronger institutional collaboration and synergy among stakeholders
Alignment with Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda
Clearer regulatory systems and improved operational coordination
Collectively, these priorities underscore a shared vision to elevate Nigeria into a competitive and attractive global tourism destination—one capable of generating employment, driving foreign exchange earnings, and contributing significantly to national development.
With renewed policy direction, stakeholder alignment, and visionary leadership, Nigeria is not only redefining its tourism landscape but also sending a clear message to the international community that the nation is open, prepared, and ready for global engagement in tourism, hospitality and the related field.
