Addis Ababa–
In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, an international conference was recently held to discuss the flotation of the Ethiopian Birr and its economic implications. Among the key highlights of the event was a groundbreaking speech by Amb. Wallace W. Williams, Hon. Consul General of Antigua and Barbuda to Nigeria, who introduced a transformative vision for Africa’s financial future: the Standard Universal Digital African Currency Contract (SUDACC).
SUDACC, as outlined by Amb. Williams, is more than a digital currency framework. It represents an innovative step towards unifying Africa’s diverse economies under the umbrella of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The initiative aims to eliminate the persistent barriers posed by currency diversity and exchange rate volatility, which continue to hinder the full potential of intra-African trade.
SUDACC: Africa’s Answer to Economic Integration
As Africa moves toward greater economic collaboration under AfCFTA—connecting over 1.3 billion people across 54 countries—the absence of a streamlined financial system remains a critical challenge. Amb. Williams emphasized how SUDACC addresses this gap by providing a standardized digital platform to facilitate seamless trade, reduce transaction costs, and enhance economic cohesion.

The envisioned impact of SUDACC is profound. It would enable a farmer in Rwanda to trade effortlessly with a supermarket in South Africa, unburdened by currency exchange concerns. Similarly, a Nigerian tech entrepreneur could expand operations across Ghana, Egypt, and Kenya with ease. This transformative framework has the potential to create an interconnected Africa where economic growth is not bound by borders or financial constraints.
Lessons from the Euro
Drawing from Europe’s experience with the Euro, Amb. Williams highlighted the parallels between pre-Euro Europe and Africa today. Europe faced fragmented currencies, trade inefficiencies, and economic disparities until the Euro facilitated unprecedented economic integration. This success story demonstrates the potential of a unified currency framework to fuel trade, investment, and regional stability.
However, the journey of the Euro also offers critical lessons for Africa. The importance of consensus-building among member states, harmonized monetary policies, and a phased implementation strategy cannot be overstated. Amb. Williams stressed that SUDACC must be tailored to Africa’s unique diversity, allowing for flexibility and inclusivity.
Building the Foundation for SUDACC
To ensure the successful implementation of SUDACC, Amb. Williams outlined three key pillars:
- Robust Regulatory Framework: Transparency, trust, and security must form the backbone of this initiative.
- Investment in Digital Infrastructure: Equal access to technology must be ensured across urban and rural regions to promote inclusivity.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Governments, businesses, and citizens must be actively involved to build confidence in the system.
While acknowledging the scale of the task, Amb. Williams expressed optimism in Africa’s ability to achieve the extraordinary. “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” he quoted Nelson Mandela, urging stakeholders to view SUDACC not just as a tool for simplifying trade, but as a means of creating a shared economic identity for the continent.
A Vision for a Unified Africa
Amb. Williams concluded his speech with a powerful call to action. He underscored that SUDACC is not only about enhancing trade but also about positioning Africa as a leader in global commerce. By embracing this initiative, Africa can demonstrate its readiness to innovate, integrate, and redefine its economic future.
The Africa International Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in partnership with other stakeholders, stands ready to support this transformative vision. As Africa unites under the AfCFTA, SUDACC has the potential to become the cornerstone of a truly integrated economic landscape—an Africa that is united in trade, purpose, and prosperity.
With bold leadership and collective effort, SUDACC can pave the way for a new era of economic unity and global relevance for Africa.
